LOCATION: in the southwest entrance of the Internacional Douro Natural Park and the Douro Superior Vine Region, just 15 minutes from the  Archaeological Côa Valley Park (UNESCO site) and the Private Protected Area called “Faia Brava”. “Casas de Villar” are the ideal starting point for those who want to discover the immense natural, archaeological, cultural and gastronomic heritage of the Region.

NATURE: the wild areas combined with an agroforestry mosaic designed by human action, allows the perfect coexistence between Man and Nature. This harmony results in a wonderful landscape of flavours, rich in excellent products such as olive oil, almonds, wine and protected landscapes rich in biodiversity.

HISTORY: very rich in archaeological and cultural heritage, where the first vestiges date back 25 thousand years ago, in the Côa  VAlley Archaeological Park  (15 minutes away), the largest open-air museum in the world, with engraving centres classified as World Heritage since 1998. The village of Castelo Rodrigo (15 min) and the historical village of Almeida (30 min) allow us to witness a past of battles for the defence or conquer of this magnificent border territory.

RIVER BEACHES: perfect way to refresh in the summer and enjoy nature.  “Casas de Villar” are located 30 minutes away from the best river beaches on the Douro and Águeda Riverers; authentic natural paradises to enjoy the water and delicious picnics by the river.

The picturesque Village of  Vilar de Amargo (“Terra do Lagarto”) located in the plateau of Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo, is dominated by a landscape of large blocks of granite, authentic natural sculptures, where cork and holm oaks surmount the Douro Valley. The contact with the different tasks of rural life is facilitated by the local population that welcome and involve visitors in different tasks according to natural cycles and their day-to-day activities.

COMFORT: “Casas de Villar” arises from the result of a perfect combination the existing and original construction, as weel as a detailed restoration, inspired by traditional construction techniques where the charm of stone and wood allows a feeling of well-being during all seasons.

Regional GASTRONOMY: rich and diverse. The local restaurants present the best national meat from animals raised in the open air, giving the meat it’s natural tenderness and taste.  Especially Borrego da Marofa (lamb) or Grilled loaf. Along the river, fried fish is served with fish “migas” (local dish – mash of bread and vegetables). For dessert “Flor de Escalhão” covered with a beautiful homemade blackberry jam or almond jam to complete a special meal. To accompany a fresh white from Beira Interior or a full-bodied red from Douro Superior.
